Los Angeles Sigmas Champion Literacy: A National Read Across America Recap

The Los Angeles Sigmas joined the National Read Across America Week festivities along with the International Education Team of Phi Beta Sigma. They rallied behind the cause of promoting literacy, emphasizing its crucial role in shaping young minds and fostering success.

Across elementary, middle, and high schools in California, we know the sobering reality of literacy disparities, particularly among Black male students. Elementary school statistics reveal that only 30% of Black boys are proficient in reading by third grade, highlighting an urgent need for early intervention.

Middle school marks a critical juncture where literacy skills become paramount. However, the numbers remain disheartening, with only 22% of Black eighth-graders proficient in reading.

High school graduation rates underscore the persistent challenges, with just 18% of Black male students proficient in reading upon graduation, compared to 41% of their White peers.

As we bid farewell to National Read Across America Week, let's remember that promoting literacy is an ongoing commitment to break down barriers, bridge the achievement gap, and cultivate a brighter future for all.
