Phi Beta Sigma Los Angeles Alumni Foundation Scholarship Luncheon Lights a Fire for Education
The Phi Beta Sigma Los Angeles Alumni Foundation's annual William Nickerson Jr. Scholarship Luncheon was a resounding success, raising over $24,000 for scholarships and educational initiatives. Held on July 13th, 2024, at The Guest House in View Park-Windsor Hills, the event brought together over 120 guests in a warm and celebratory atmosphere.
The theme, "Ignite the Pathway," perfectly captured the spirit of the day. Scholarship awardees, including nine graduating high school seniors, five continuing college students, and three educators receiving Schoolie Awards, were the true stars. Their dedication to education and their commitment to their communities were an inspiration to all.
State Senator Steven Bradford of the 35th district and the office of Congresswoman Sydney Kamlager-Dove of California's 37th district sent their acknowledgements, highlighting the importance of the Foundation's work. Bro. Dr. Steven J. Rice, President of The Phi Beta Sigma Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., presented Bro. Octarve "Odie" Mitchell with The Brother of the Year Award.
Guests enjoyed a warm California welcome with cool sparkling water, prosecco, and charcuterie plates before indulging in a delicious lunch courtesy of Irma Lee's BBQ.

Elijah Flores, a Morehouse College computer science student and scholarship recipient, spoke of his aspirations, "Once I earn my degree, it will put me in a better position so I can continue giving back to my community and inspire others to follow the same path, hopefully contributing to the advancement of African American youth." His words resonated with the luncheon's theme, highlighting the potential of education to empower and uplift entire communities.
Jarrett Moore, another scholarship recipient and a Sigma Beta Scholar, added, "Community service is part of my life. I plan to continue in college and throughout my career as an engineer." Moore's dedication to giving back exemplifies the well-rounded individuals the scholarship program aims to support.
Jacqueline Sparrow, a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. and a Schoolie Award recipient, spoke to the critical role of educators. "Teachers are arguably the most important members of our society," she remarked. "They give children purpose, set them up for success as citizens of our world, and inspire in them a drive to do well and succeed in life." Her words underscored the importance of not only supporting students but also the educators who shape their futures.
